PerfectMail Activity Graphs

PerfectMail presents activity data by graphs and by reports. The default for the Activity page is a set of 4 rows of graphs. These graphs provide the same data on a 24-hour, 7-day, 30-day and 30-week basis.

Graphs are presented as thumb-nail images so that you can quickly assess overall activity levels. Each thumb-nail is clickable. Selecting any graph provides you with a fullscreen image and the data used to prepare the graph.

PerfectMail Activity Main page

Each graph plots exactly the same data over the selected interval:

  • Accept
Plotted in green, this is the number (percent) of messages that were accepted for delivery.
  • Tag
Plotted in yellow, this is the number (percent) of messages where PerfectMail was uncertain of the message status (the messages scored higher than we'd like, but not high enough to reject).
  • Reject
The message was judged to be sufficiently objectionable that it was refused. Senders always receive a reject code and message whenever PerfectMail refuses a message.
  • Real-Time Black Hole Listed (RBL) systems
Messages in purple are messages that originate from know spam networks or servers. Unless the sender has prior history with the local PerfectMail appliance, messages from such systems are always refused.
  • Miner
It may come as a suprise that only a small portion of all e-mail traffic is visible. For most systems, the vast majority of e-mail traffic consists of remote servers trying to guess e-mail account names. We rever to this activity as Mining and systems that engage in it are referred to as Miners.

Spammers do this so that they can add to their lists of known good users. If you've every experienced a ten-fold increase in Spam, you were probably the victim of a successful mining attack.

There are four types of graphs:

  1. Line Charts
Left-most column. All raw data is ploted over the sample interval.
  2. Stacked & Filled Charts
Next column in from the left. Lines are plotted and the area under each line is filled with its appropriate color. Plot order is always Accept, Tag, Reject Real-Time Black Hole List and Miner.
  3. Percent Stacked & Filled Charts
The third column from the left plots all data as a percent of total activity for the sample interval. Again, data is stacked so you can see relative portions.
  4. Pie Charts
Data is aggregated over the sample interval and plotted as a pie chart. This chart gives you a great overall view of what's been happening over the selected period of time.

Graphs are presented over four time intervals (from top to bottom):

  • 30 Weeks
This is a great, long-term view of how much work PerfectMail has handled. This gives you the best view of the overall types of e-mail activity your organization experiences. Data is aggregated to weekly data points for each of the five categories.

  • 30 Days
All five categories are sumarized and plotted on a daily basis for the last thirty days.

  • 7 Days
All five categories are sumarized and plotted every six hours for a total of 28 plots over seven days.

  • 24 Hours
All five categories are rolled up into hourly values and plotted.
